POTUS Trump’s Syria policy continues to claim casualties — in the DC Swamp

The announcement last week by POTUS Donald Trump that he would pull all 2,000 U.S. troops out of Syria continues to claim casualties, but not in that war-torn shell of a country.

The casualties are mounting in Washington, D.C.

As reported and confirmed by Fox News:

Brett McGurk, the U.S. envoy for the global coalition to defeat Islamic State (ISIS), has resigned in the wake of President Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops out of Syria, Fox News confirmed Saturday — coming on the heels of the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis earlier this week.

U.S. officials said this week that the Trump administration is making plans to pull all 2,000 troops out of Syria, and Trump later tweeted that “we have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.”

McGurk’s resignation came on Friday, the network reported and was a direct result of the president’s decision — which he telegraphed on the campaign trail in 2016 but that apparently no one in the DC Swamp took seriously.

McGurk, who was appointed to his post in 2015 by former President Obama, has said in the past that it would be unwise for the U.S. to leave Syria because ISIS was down but not out.

“Nobody is saying that they are going to disappear. Nobody is that naive,” he told reporters during a Dec. 11 press conference, calling any decision to pull out American forces “reckless.”

“So we want to stay on the ground and make sure that stability can be maintained in these areas,” he added.

But until when?

McGurk’s resignation comes just days after Defense Secretary James Mattis handed in his papers, citing the president’s Syria decision as the last straw but also noting that POTUS deserves a defense secretary “whose views are better aligned with yours.”

The McGurk resignation signals again that the Swamp is diametrically opposed to this president on virtually all matters foreign and domestic. But POTUS Trump’s senior adviser, Stephen Miller, explained to CNN‘s Wolf Blitzer on Friday that this administration is dead-set against continuing the ‘tradition’ of sending American forces into third-world failed states indefinitely, especially when no one can justify the continued expense in lives and money and no progress is being made against the initial objective.

That includes Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton.

As for McGurk, he’s definitely a swamp rat. Per Fox News:

McGurk previously served as a deputy assistant secretary of state for Iraq and Iran, and led secret side talks with Iran about the release of American prisoners during the negotiations for the Iran nuclear deal.

McGurk had previously worked as a Supreme Court law clerk to the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist. He had also served on former President George W. Bush’s National Security Council staff, where in 2007 and 2008, he was the lead U.S. negotiator on security agreements with Iraq.

Granted, you could make the case that McGurk, a career public servant, was merely carrying out the assignments he was given. And that would be fair.

But as POTUS has repeatedly pointed out, our commitments overseas in places like Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan have been open-ended and non-stop. There has never been any serious discussion about what the end game looks like and/or how we finally get there. That result, it seems, is always “two or three years” down the road.

No more. The president is through doubling down on never-ending military commitments. And he believes the country is behind him on that. We think he’s right.
