(TNS) Americans who aren’t stricken with Trump Derangement Syndrome are never happy when their fellow citizens die in a foreign land, in service of their country.
But the death of an American contractor along with the wounding of several U.S. service members on a military base near Kirkuk, Iraq, a week ago has had far greater consequences on the country to whom the group that launched the attack answers to: Iran.
That response triggered an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad by Iran-backed militias, and while Left-wing psychos were hoping and praying that would become “Trump’s Benghazi,” the president was busy huddling with his military commanders and intelligence chiefs planning the next move.
Overnight, reports flooded in that the U.S. response targeted Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force and chief mischief maker in the region.
The Pentagon confirmed Thursday evening that Trump had ordered the attack that killed Soleimani and other military officials at Baghdad International Airport. Iran’s top “shadow commander” was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more, the State Department said. …
The State Department said the airstrike “was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans.”
“General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region… The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world.”
Mind you, anything President Trump does is ‘wrong’ or ‘stupid’ or ‘risky’ or ‘dumb,’ so already there are critics panning his decision to strike the top Iranian troublemaker in the Middle East. CBS News senior national security contributor, and former acting and deputy CIA director during the Obama administration, Michael Morell, warned that killing Soleimani will lead to “dead civilian Americans.”
And, of course, congressional Democrats were quick to leap on the anti-Trump bandwagon.

The fact is, this president took decisive action when Americans and American interests were threatened. While everyone is sweating ‘big, bad, Iran,’ this president knows who the big dog on the porch is, and he doesn’t live in Tehran.
It wasn’t as if Soleimani didn’t have this coming. And it sure didn’t come out of the blue. Reuters reported that Soleimani was warned by then-CIA Director Mike Pompeo in December 2017 to lay off the shenanigans and stop messing around with U.S. allies and interests in Iraq:
U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo said on Saturday he sent a letter to Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani and Iranian leaders expressing concern regarding Iran’s increasingly threatening behavior in Iraq.
Speaking during a panel at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in Southern California, Pompeo said he sent the letter after the senior Iranian military commander had indicated that forces under his control might attack U.S. forces in Iraq. He did not specify the date.
“What we were communicating to him in that letter was that we will hold he and Iran accountable for any attacks on American interests in Iraq by forces that are under their control,” Pompeo told the panel.
“We wanted to make sure he and the leadership in Iran understood that in a way that was crystal clear.”
Soleimani, who is the commander of foreign operations for Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, refused to open the letter, according to Pompeo, who took over the CIA in January.
That turned out to be Soleimani’s biggest error.
We warned in February 2017 — a month after Trump was inaugurated — that he would not tolerate any nonsense from Iran’s leaders:
The fact is, the Iranians have been empowered by Obama to believe they’re something more than they are. And should Tehran’s mullahs be stupid enough to think that they can attack a U.S. ship or base in the Middle East with impunity – because they think President Donald Trump is a buffoon leading an administration full of buffoons, they’ll quickly find out that’s not the case.
Because the fact is, if Iran tries a “strong slap in the face,” the Trump administration will kick Iran’s ass. It’s just that simple. And probably in record time.
Sadly, we lost an American military contractor last week. But President Trump’s response could not have been stronger.
Now the message has been sent to Iran loud and clear, as we predicted it would be: Trump is no Obama, and the United States is nobody’s patsy anymore.
