Democrats need to ‘come to their senses’ on border security or ‘I’ll declare a national emergency’

POTUS Donald Trump threatened again Saturday evening he would declare a national emergency to deal with the “humanitarian crisis” along the U.S.-Mexico border unless Democrats acted to fund his border security measures including the construction of physical barriers that includes walls.

In an interview with Fox News’ Judge Janine Pirro, the president said he would make is declaration if Democrats “don’t come to their senses,” adding they are prolonging the current partial government shutdown, now the longest in U.S. history.

“I have the absolute right to call a national emergency,” Trump reiterated, adding “I’d rather see the Democrats come back from their vacation and act,” added, a possible reference to some 30 Democrats who traveled to Puerto Rico to meet with lobbyists and attend a special performance of “Hamilton.”

The president told Pirro that he hasn’t left the White House since the shutdown began in an effort to make himself available to opposition Democrats for negotiations on wall funding and other measures aimed at shoring up border security.

“I’ve been here virtually every night,” he said.

Some 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed by the shutdown which includes the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, the Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other agencies tasked with securing U.S. borders.

Republicans, meanwhile, think it is an abomination that Democrats who supported physical barriers in the past would allow federal employees who are charged with border security to go without pay.

As for his declaration, POTUS said he first wants “to give [Democrats] the chance to see if they can act responsibly. … It’s a humanitarian crisis and its national security.”

Border officials agree though Democrats and most of the Dem-friendly media is claiming that there is no “crisis” and that the president is hyping the situation along the border to ‘sell’ his wall.

In addition to siding with the president’s description of a crisis, however, Border Patrol officials and others also favor physical barriers — a wall, fencing, anything that impedes illegal immigration and curbs drug-smuggling.

Meanwhile, a new migrant caravan is forming in Honduras, according to published reports Friday. Social media fliers announcing the new caravan say it will kick off its northward trek Jan. 15.
