AOC Turns to Conservative Principle to Boost Her Brand

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) just showed that socialists may not be as opposed to the free market as they would have us believe. And in so doing, she exposed areas in which the conservative movement is severely lacking: marketing and branding. The GOP would do well to take heed if it wishes to compete with the likes of AOC and the squad.

Funds for Coronavirus Relief

The New York Post reported that AOC managed to raise a significant sum of money by playing a video game online. The funds will go to people suffering hardships because of COVID-19. From The Post:

“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars for people in need because of the coronavirus pandemic by playing the interactive online game ‘Among Us’ over the Thanksgiving holiday with a Canadian lawmaker.

“The New York Democrat played the social deduction game for five hours on Friday with Jagmeet Singh, a member of the Canadian parliament and head of Canada’s New Democratic Party, to raise the $200,000 for those without enough to eat and at risk of being evicted.”

As Ocasio-Cortez and Singh live-streamed their game, people donated to the cause. The two politicians took a page from the book of gamers who stream their sessions and get paid by those who want to be in the audience. Many YouTube gamers earn quite a profit just for playing video games all day.

After the virtual event on Nov. 28, Ocasio-Cortez celebrated on Twitter. “We did it! $200k raised in one live-stream (on a whim!) for eviction defense, food pantries, and more. This is going to make such a difference for those who need it most right now. Thank you all,” she wrote.

Singh responded to a tweet from AOC thanking her for participating. “Thank you @AOC! It was awesome chatting with you about how we can build a better world. In Canada, things aren’t perfect and we face many of the same challenges. But, together we can do better,” he said. “My mom always taught me: When we lift each other up, we all rise.”

A Brilliant Branding Strategy

Ocasio-Cortez used an innovative venue to raise funds for those in need. No government involvement, a simple free-market endeavor. People were willing to part with their money to watch AOC play Among Us, a top-rated (and addictive) game, while supporting a worthy cause.

But it was so much more than that. It was an ingenious way for AOC to continue building her brand, especially with younger voters, a group that Republicans have had trouble reaching. Through events such as these, high-profile leftists cleverly evangelize progressive ideas while entertaining their audiences.

No doubt the far left will continue to employ such strategies to earn more support. But where are conservatives? The right, which constantly bangs the drum of free-market solutions, should have been the first to use this tactic. The Republican Party has several prominent figures who could easily pull off an event such as this.

The nation appears to be moving into a new phase in American politics, with a paradigm shift on the horizon. The GOP and the conservative movement must generate bold new methods to capture the attention of the public and adopt more of an entrepreneurial mindset to garner more support. Business as usual doesn’t cut it anymore. Building a bigger base of supporters requires them to connect with people they have not previously engaged. Are the leaders of the conservative movement watching this?
